April 2025 Newsletter

A lot of our work this month has been a little less visible than usual. With the NWH Executive Director, Anton, on a road trip with his family, many needs were fulfilled remotely, though our Hospitality Cards.

Hospitality Cards are similar to debit cards and operate through the PEX platform, which allows NW Hospitality to issue and manage cards for the unhoused folks we work with or advocates who work with folks, to help them meet their needs. NW Hospitality can add funds and manage the use of cards held by different people. We ask that clients send us a photo of the receipt, when possible.

This program has been hugely successful for us. It allows us to meet needs quickly and efficiently. Instead of a volunteer needing to drive to meet up with a client, the client can purchase the item they need themselves. This program helps us build relationships with our neighbors, trusting that they are the ones that know best what their needs are.

We get a lot of request for things that are fairly small but that are needed with extreme urgency and are time sensitive. $30 for gas to get to work - so a client doesn’t risk losing their job, putting them in an even worse situation. $22 for a tank of propane - so a client can stay warm with a heater or cook a meal that night. $130 for a new tent - tents get ruined easily in our harsh weather or a sweep, getting a replacement tent quickly can mean a client and their belongs stay safe and dry for the night.

Being able to provide funds in real-time for these things can be hugely impactful.

Other things we have been up to:

Earlier this month, NWH volunteers Maggie, Matthew, and Raelenea, spent a Saturday morning helping a client get her belongings moved from a storage unit into her apartment in Bremerton, WA. Our client was beyond delighted to be able to sleep in her own bed that night.

Last week, NWH volunteers, Philip and Maggie, brought the Mobile Supply Closet out the Kitsap Recovery Center. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were able to set up distribution outside. We bring clothing and hygiene items to the Recovery Center just about every month. And enjoy meeting the folks in recovery, that are doing the hard work of improving their lives.
